Maybe You Should Just...
Have you ever been sick and had someone suggest that you try this miracle “cure” that is “guaranteed” to fix whatever problem you are dealing with? People do this when someone is struggling with a physical illness, and even more so when the struggle is with a mental illness. Psychology is a new science. It’s a baby. There is so much we do not understand about the human brain. That is what is so fascinating about it. There is so much to learn. What makes the brain interesting also makes it frustrating when it comes to treatment for mental illness. The issue is that what works for one person isn’t necessarily going to work for someone else. I say I am depressed, and someone suggests I go outside more, or get more exercise, or eat more protein, or try this product they are selling. Some people believe that it is ok to take medications for mental illness, while others believe that those medications are absolute garbage, and you should only go on a keto diet and try essential oils. Some people think that you pray more. My favorite of all is “just get over it” as if I had not thought of that. As if I would not just flip a switch or wave a magic wand and be miraculously healed of my depression if that were a viable option. The fact of the matter is, all these things work for some people, but none of them work for all people. I cannot guarantee you a cure or a fix for your mental health struggles because I am not you. I do not know what goes on in your life and inside your head, and I do not know what it’s going to take to make it better, or at least easier for you. I hope that, if you are struggling with a mental health issue such as depression, or anxiety or with an addiction, that you seek help. Whatever that looks like for you. Talk to your doctor, your pastor, a counselor, and come up with a treatment regimen that works for you. Please do not let anyone make you feel bad because you are not able to “eat pray love” your way out of your depression. Help IS available, and there is hope, but it looks different for every individual person, and that is totally ok.
